Life Support Training Center at HUMC (North Region)

Welcome to the Hackensack Meridian Health Life Support Training Center at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC).

We provide American Heart Association certification and renewal training for healthcare professionals across the Hackensack Meridian Health network, including HUMC, Palisades Medical Center, and other affiliated facilities. Courses are also available for participants from non-HMH organizations.

Our programs support EMTs, paramedics, nurses, physicians, and advanced practice providers with flexible in-person, hybrid, and online learning designed to keep clinical teams certified, confident, and ready when it matters most.

The Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) program teaches a systematic and concise approach to the care of trauma patients by providing a safe and reliable method for immediate evaluation and treatment. The program focuses on treating the greatest threat to life first. It demonstrates how to assess a patient’s condition, resuscitate and stabilize the patient, and determine if their needs exceed a facility’s capacity.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the ATLS program, the provider will be able to: 
• Demonstrate the concepts and principles of the primary and secondary patient assessments. 
• Establish management priorities in a trauma situation. 
• Initiate primary and secondary management necessary for the emergency management of acute life-threatening conditions promptly. 
 
Accreditation:
The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  
 
Types of Courses:
ATLS Hybrid Courses are available for those taking ATLS for the first time or those renewing their ATLS Certification. 
 
Course Completion Requirements:
• Complete online modules PRIOR to the day of course - if not completed, you will not be able to attend the course.
• Attend and participate in the entire course
• Pass the post course test with a 75% or better
 
ATLS Non-HMH Employees:
• Physician- $1000.00
• Resident- $750.00
• PA/NP- $500.00
• Auditor- $250.00
 
ATLS HMH Employees:

This course is designed for those seeking AHA BLS Instructor Renewals. Requirements for Instructor renewal include attending and completing the renewal course, successfully passing the BLS skills portion ofr adult and infant, and passing the written exam with a score of 84% or higher.

Instructors seeking renewal must have taught a total of 4 courses over the period of 2 years. 

 

The fee for the course is $100 for NON HUMC employees. 

Current HUMC employees are not charged for the renewal course.

NON HUMC employees please bring a check for $100 made out to Hackensack University Medical Center 

 


Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Course

The Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Course is designed for healthcare professionals who must recognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies in clinical and pre-hospital environments.

Participants will learn how to perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner.

Hackensack University Medical Center is authorized as an American Heart Association Training Center for the Basic Life Support Program.


Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of early recognition and activation of the emergency response system
  • Perform high-quality 1- and 2-rescuer CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • Describe the importance of early defibrillation
  • Demonstrate the proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Recognize and relieve choking in responsive and unresponsive victims over one year of age and in infants
  • Explain the importance of each link in the Adult and Pediatric Chain of Survival
This course follows the most current American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

HMH Team Members – HeartCode® Blended Learning

HeartCode® BLS, ACLS, and PALS are American Heart Association (AHA) blended learning courses that combine online training with hands-on skills verification.

These courses use interactive simulations to help healthcare professionals practice and apply life-saving skills in both hospital and pre-hospital environments.

Access to the online course modules will be provided within two business day of registration.


Steps to Complete Your Course

  1. Complete and pass the online cognitive portion of the HeartCode® course.
  2. After finishing the online module, register for a HeartCode® skills check session.
  3. Do not register for a traditional in-person CPR class. HeartCode® participants only need to complete the skills verification session.

Each skills check session (BLS, ACLS, or PALS) typically takes approximately 15 minutes per discipline.

Skills verification can be completed with an American Heart Association instructor or through the VAM (Voice-Assisted Manikin) system.

If you are completing multiple disciplines (BLS, ACLS, or PALS), you only need to schedule one skills check session.

HeartCode® Skills Check Session

Register to complete the hands-on skills verification session for your HeartCode® BLS, ACLS, or PALS course.

The skills check session allows participants to demonstrate the practical skills required for certification after completing the online HeartCode® course modules.

Session Duration
Skills verification typically takes 15–30 minutes per discipline.

If you are unable to attend your scheduled course, notify the Training Center at heartcoderequesthumcpmc@hmhn.org to cancel your seat or you will be marked as a no-show.

If your BLS / ACLS / PALS certification is expired, you may not sit for a renewal course and must complete a HeartCode assignment first.

  • Your full name
  • Your unit / department
  • The course(s) you need assigned
